devansh@dragonflyproject.comIn my view, digital literacy is achieved when an individual is able to weave technology into any facet of life.Whether it be for communication between peers, efficiency at work,or even entertainment and leisure. The goal is to ensure that children of all ages at schools, are comfortable with digital tools and technologies.Confidence before Competence is what the project is about.
Computer literacy in Nepal is still in its nascent stage. Many schools across the nation are still struggling to afford a computer, let alone offer articulate courses.
Yet, the constitution of Nepal promulgated in 2015 states that the public should be able to easily access information. The policy also adds that this ease of access to information should be ensured through expansion of information technology as it is in necessary for accelerating the nation's development.
Our goal at The Dragonfly Project is to align policy with implementation and impart computer literacy to students at the school level to become proficient in the use of technology and the internet.
×Dragonfly project is a school level digital literacy project currently underway in Nepal.
Dragonfly project is a school level digital literacy project currently underway in Nepal. The aim of the project is to provide Nepali students with the tools, and skills necessary to effectively harness the power of the technology developing around them.
By conducting seminars, workshops, and classes we provide students with the knowledge required to access and interpret information from around the world.
×Our beginner classes begin with the students sitting at a computer and start with a warm up lesson by getting them to type something on the computer. We often get them to type the Days Lesson.
We demonstrate the use of real software, show them the internet and software in use, and rather them teach the software, show them the its use and power of the software.
We even have videos, games and such interactive resources. We complement this with hand-outs, links to more resources on the internet.
×I am often asked, "but can you teach the children all this in such short a while?" My bigger sceptics have taken the criticism further by even questioning my credibility in being able to actually impart real knowledge. To all these I say that learning begins with doing! And doing begins by seeing!
If I see something being done, and then gather the courage to do something by myself, I am able to overcome the barrier of insecurity. So more than competence, I want my children to become confident in using digital tools and digital technologies.
So my curriculum has been kept simple. I start with a bit of touch typing and then there is a day’s lesson covering Word and Academic tools/software; Basic Internet access and usage; Search functions; Google functions; Social Media and Cyber security and Ecommerce. Across these topics I use my PC to show them. Ask them to do what I just did, and introduce them to video tools like You Tube and other internet links and resources to create a self-learning capacity and generate additional enthusiasm and confidence to continue the learning and usage process.
